10-week and 11-week course content
All our plumbing courses cover the City & Guilds 6129 level 2 and also the NVQ level 2 plumbing course 6089.
If you decide to take the 11-week (option 2) course you will also gain the Part P electrical qualification.

10-week full time plumbing course
Your course consists of 10 weeks full time tutor lead instruction. After this you can either, start work straight away as a self employed plumber, or be employed by a plumbing company.
The training course is a 10 week full time course that covers the City & Guilds 6129 level 2 certificate and 6089 NVQ level 2 certificate in basic plumbing skills.
Study times are 9:00am – 6:00pm Monday to Friday for 10 consecutive weeks.
The course is split approximately 50/50 between workshop and classroom based training. The subjects covered are as follows:

- Health and Safety
- Cold Water Supply
- Environmental Awareness
- General Plumbing Principles
- Drainage
- Safety
- Key principles
- Common plumbing processes
- Cold water systems
- Domestic hot water systems
- Sanitation systems
- Central heating systems (pipework only)
- Electrical supply and earth continuity
- Sheet weatherings
- Effective working relationships
- Environmental awareness

During your 10 weeks training, you will start with the basics and lead up to the standard of domestic plumbing (listed below). City & Guilds qualified assessors will undertake all assessments throughout the course; this also includes photographic evidence for you to include in your completed Portfolio.
- Safe use of ladders/steps/scaffolds
- Assembly and safe use of LPG equipment
- Kinetic lifting/lifting equipment
- Fire fighting
- Working safely with hand/power tools
- Hazardous materials lead/asbestos/solvents
- Copper tube positioning/fixing/dimensions
- Copper tube marketing/cutting/bending
- Copper tube jointing and testing
- Copper tube fabrication and installation
- Rainwater systems
- Soil and waste pipe dimensions fabrication and installation
- Pressure pipe fitting and dimensions
- Air test soil pipe
- Low Carbon Steel Pipe (LCS) fitting requirements
- LCS positions, fixing, marking and cutting
- LCS machine bending jointing, testing
- LCS fabrication and installation
- Maintenance radiator valve
- Maintenance WC siphon
- Maintenance pillar tap and float valve
- Maintenance shower mixer valve
- Economic use of materials
- Application of temporary earth bonding

City & Guilds 6129 assessments
The City & Guilds level 2 6129 technical certificate consists of the following assessments:
- Sheet lead identifying and measuring
- Cutting lead, forming components and lead slate
- Chimney weathering and basic maintenance
- Bathroom WC suite
- Bathroom bath
- Bathroom radiator
- Bathroom combi jig
- Decommissioning hot and cold water system
- Decommissioning sanitation system
- Airing cupboard storage cistern
- Airing cupboard hot water cylinder
- Any outstanding phase tests
After successful completion of this phase (which includes passing all assessments and exams) you will have gained your City & Guilds level 2 Technical Certificate in Basic Plumbing Skills. You will also have completed 90% of the NVQ level 2.
NVQ level 2
The final 10% of the NVQ level 2 is work-based. Therefore you need to be working as a plumber – either for a plumbing company or self-employed.
On average, you will have to be assessed on 3 separate on-site visits. Most plumbers complete their NVQ 2 within 6 months of leaving the 10 week course - it is entirely up to you when these visits take place. Once completed you will then be awarded the NVQ 2.

Up to this point, both 10-week and 11-week course students will have achieved the above. The following electrical course content only applies to students on an 11-week (option 2) course.
