HOW THE 10-WEEK COURSES ARE RUN

Here at VIY (UK Plumbing Training) we run courses to gain the following certificates. The City and Guilds 6129 Technical Level 2 and 6089 NVQ Level 2 certificates These 2 certificates are the only recognised qualifications required to enter the plumbing industry. These two certificates are the exact same certificates you would gain if you were an apprentice on a two year college course.

The first weeks of the course
The first part of the course takes place in the lecture rooms. During those first weeks you will undertake exams. All these exams are multiple choice.

The following weeks of the course
You now go to the workshops for the remaining weeks of the course, where you will gain all the practical skills required to become a plumber. Once again, there will be assessments throughout the training. There is extra training and assistance available to any student who may need help.

Bpec (British Plumbing Employers Council) Level 3 Qualifications
Bpec certificates are offered on our courses to keep students up to date with the changes that have occurred in the plumbing industry within the past few years. During the course you will have been taught about Unvented Hot Water Systems, Water Regulations and Energy Efficiency. These Bpec certificates are completely separate from your City and Guilds qualifications. All Bpec certificates will be issued to you approx 3 months after the end of your course. Many Bpec qualifications carry "Approved Plumber" status, this will be available once you have received your certificate and (as in the case of Bpec water regulations) have gained your NVQ 2 or 3 certificates.

The last week of the course
For the whole of this week you will be trained and assessed in gaining your electrical qualifications which, if passed, allow the student to become a "Competent Person". New regulations in the building industry require that all person working with electric installations as part of their trade i.e. bricklayers, carpenters, kitchen fitters, plumbers etc need to be qualified accordingly. The qualification allows the candidate to install and certify their own electrical installation. If a plumber does not have Part P electrical qualifications, then they will have to have all their electrical work checked by a competent person.
Once the course is completed, you are able to start work as a plumber.

After the course
Once you have completed your course you can now start working as a plumber. After we have checked some on-site work you are in the process of installing, we can then apply for your NVQ 2 certificate. All City and Guilds courses work this way. The on-site work can be carried out at a customer's home, a friend's home or even your own home... You choose where and when these visits take place. If you have previous experience in the plumbing industry, then the on-site visits can take place immediately at the end of the course. If, like most of our students, you come without any plumbing knowledge, then the on-site visits can take place as soon as you feel ready. The average timescale is around 3 to 6 months after finishing your course. You do have up to 2 years to complete if you wish. It is entirely up to you.

All courses qualify for the following:-

FREE - Toolbox, FREE - Toolkit, FREE - Overalls
FREE - Self Employment Handouts-Pricing customers jobs etc.
FREE - Helpline when working as a plumber (mobile / telephone / email)
